Africa’s e-commerce market is worth more than 30 600 Billion CFA as of 2024, and it’s still climbing. The catch: the digital infrastructure needed to connect small sellers to regional markets is still thin on the ground. On August 12, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) — the World Bank Group’s private-sector arm — put 15.3 billion CFA into Jumia Technologies AG. The goal: strengthen the company’s marketplace and logistics network across its core markets.
Building tech infrastructure that can scale 🔧
The money is only half the story. The real bet is on building a technology platform robust enough to handle growth. Automated logistics, digitized supply chains, tighter integration across distribution channels: Jumia is gearing up to absorb demand from a fast-expanding market. IFC estimates the deal could help around 60,000 local active sellers join the digital economy every year, while supporting roughly 1,800 direct jobs and creating income opportunities for more than 100,000 independent sales agents.
« Jumia demonstrates how pan-African e-commerce platforms can expand economic opportunity at scale, » said Farid Fezoua, Director for Equity, Funds, and Venture Capital at IFC.
A market that’s still wide open 📈
The number of online shoppers in Africa has grown by an average of 18% a year since 2014 — a clear signal of rising digital appetite. With operations in eight markets, Jumia is counting on this fresh capital to consolidate its integrated commerce and logistics ecosystem. For its part, IFC hopes the move will catalyze further private investment and accelerate the continent’s digital transformation.
Is logistics automation the key to unlocking e-commerce across Africa, or do internet access and purchasing power need to be tackled first? Let us know in the comments.
