Starting October 15, 2024, Google’s video platform will allow content creators to post « Shorts » up to 3 minutes long, compared to the previous 1 minute limit. This change further separates the experience between long-format videos, which dominate the platform, and the ultra-popular short videos.
New Interface and Features 🤩
The Shorts interface will be revamped and improved to give creators more visibility. Specifically, it will be less cluttered to focus more on the videos themselves. In addition, Google will introduce a button to show fewer shorts on users’ feeds and homepages, although this button will only work temporarily.
Furthermore, the creator’s name, description, and sound information will be compressed to take up less space at the bottom of the screen. This means video descriptions will be truncated, requiring users to click the « more » button to read the full text.
Competing with TikTok 🤯
For Google, this change aims to compete with TikTok, which now allows videos up to 10 minutes long. For content creators, this provides a format closer to TikTok’s. Three-minute videos posted on « classic » YouTube will remain in their usual format, while square or vertical videos of 3 minutes or less can appear in the Shorts feed, depending on the creator’s choice.
Shorts users will also be able to tap the « Remix » option and select « Use this template » to create their own video from a starting model. YouTube states that in the coming months, users will be able to access content from the Shorts camera, further simplifying remixing clips or music videos, or pulling multiple clips from YouTube.
Engaging the Community 👭🏽👬🏾
Google is also introducing a new trending Shorts page on mobile, showcasing what’s popular based on the user’s country. The platform will also offer a preview of what people are saying in the comments directly from the Shorts feed, before even opening the full feed.
