Do you often manually close applications on your smartphone? Contrary to popular belief, this is not a good idea. We talk about it in this week’s #AskTheGriots.

Your smartphone is smart

Android and iOS are equipped with multitasking systems that enable smooth navigation between applications. These systems are intelligent, because when you switch from one application to another, the first is automatically put to sleep after a certain time, while remaining quickly accessible. Some people mistakenly think that closing an application manually from the list of recent applications saves battery life, when in fact the opposite is true.

Close when needed

An application in standby mode consumes very little battery, whereas launching an application consumes much more energy, as it has to load all the data it needs on startup. Closing an application manually several times a day therefore has a negative impact on battery life.

Of course, if your application crashes, you need to close it manually. It’s also advisable to restart your smartphone at least once a week. It helps it to clean itself up.
