Morocco has officially entered the era of ultra-fast connectivity. On Friday, November 7, 2025, the country’s three major telecom operators — Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc, and Inwi — announced the commercial rollout of 5G. The launch comes just weeks before the nation hosts the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), setting the stage for a showcase of next-generation technology.
Blazing speeds and broad coverage 📶
With 5G, Moroccan operators are promising download speeds exceeding 2 Gbps, near-zero latency, and a massive boost in capacity for both consumer and enterprise use. That means smoother video calls, lag-free gaming, ultra-HD streaming, and the potential for more advanced industrial applications.
Orange Maroc is leading the rollout, activating 5G service across 135 prefectures and provinces — already covering a large portion of the country. Maroc Telecom and Inwi are following closely, focusing their deployments on major cities and strategic regions.
Inwi subscribers won’t need to switch plans or replace their SIM cards to access 5G — as long as their smartphones are compatible, the upgrade will be seamless.
A cornerstone of “Morocco Digital 2030” 🛰️
The 5G launch is a key step in the national strategy Morocco Digital 2030, which aims to connect 25% of the population by the end of 2025 and 70% by 2030. The plan seeks to strengthen Morocco’s position in the global digital economy and drive transformation in healthcare, education, public administration, and entrepreneurship.
For policymakers, 5G isn’t just a technical upgrade — it’s an engine for innovation. The network is expected to enhance digital sovereignty, attract foreign tech investment, and spark the growth of startups specializing in AI, IoT, and cybersecurity.
A connected AFCON 2025 🏟️
When the Africa Cup of Nations kicks off on December 21, Morocco’s 5G infrastructure will face its first real-world test. Organizers, media crews, and fans will benefit from high-speed, low-latency connections — crucial for live streaming, digital ticketing, and immersive experiences inside and around stadiums.
The event will also serve as a proof of concept for Morocco’s network reliability, showcasing the nation’s technological strength as it welcomes the continent’s biggest sporting event. AFCON 2025 could well become the first truly “connected” African tournament.
A history of strong mobile coverage 📊
Even before the arrival of 5G, Morocco already boasted some of the best mobile coverage in Africa:
- 99.64% of the population covered by 3G
- 98.63% by 4G
- 99.64% by 2G
(according to the Ministry of Digital Transition)
The rollout of 5G caps more than a decade of steady modernization. The new network could transform digital life across sectors — from telemedicine and remote learning to e-government and industrial automation.
A new engine for the digital economy 🌍
By betting big on 5G, Morocco is reinforcing its ambition to become a leading African tech hub — competitive, connected, and future-ready. This infrastructure leap could position the country as a regional model for smart connectivity.
Beyond AFCON 2025, the move is expected to fuel economic growth, accelerate digital transformation, and solidify Morocco’s place in the global data-driven economy.
