Algeria wants to move from AI strategy to execution. Authorities have kicked off the first phase of the national AI strategy’s rollout, with an inter-ministerial roadmap now in place to guide its deployment across public services.

Betting on homegrown AI 🖥️🤖

Beyond adopting new digital tools, Algiers is focused on building real technical control over AI. The roadmap calls for developing sovereign, open-source government AI models, built specifically for public-sector needs.

That ambition also requires the right compute. High-performance computing infrastructure is set to be made available to research institutes and startups, giving them the ability to design and train their own AI models domestically.

Storing and processing public data is another key piece of the puzzle. Authorities want administrative and public-sector data kept securely within national data centers.

Skills at the center of the plan 🎓💡

Technology is only part of the equation. Algeria also wants to grow its pool of domestic AI talent. To get there, intensive training programs are being developed in partnership with universities and research institutes.

Data analysis and generative AI are among the priority areas. The government also plans to set up a dedicated AI research center, along with specialized units, aimed at bridging academic research and industry needs — and turning scientific work into real-world applications.

Guardrails for responsible AI 🔐⚖️

Rolling out these technologies will also mean grappling with security and ethics. Algerian authorities have stressed the need for reliable, ethical AI use across the sectors involved — a requirement tied directly to protecting public data while building tools that actually improve how government functions.

To move from plan to execution, a joint oversight committee was reportedly established following the August 5 meeting, tasked with monitoring the roadmap’s rollout against a defined timeline.

With this framework, Algeria is aiming to turn its national AI strategy into projects that actually run inside government. The country wants to speed up the modernization of its public services while building domestic capacity in what’s become a strategic sector.

So, which public service do you think should get AI first in Algeria?
