Spotify rolls out in-app chat while Hi-Fi audio is still missing in action 😬

In the streaming world, every Spotify update gets picked apart. But this time, the surprise is big: the Swedish giant has just rolled out a built-in messaging feature—while many users are still waiting for the long-promised Hi-Fi audio. Is this a true social leap or just another flashy distraction? Let’s dive in.
Share your vibes without leaving the app 🎶
We’ve all done it: discover a track, jump over to WhatsApp or Messenger, and send it to a friend. Spotify wants to stop that detour. With its new “Messages” feature, you can now share music, podcasts, or audiobooks directly inside the app. On the playback screen, a single tap lets you send content to a friend you’re connected with via Blend playlists, Duo, or Family plans. And just like any other chat, you can reply with text or emojis—all without ever leaving Spotify.
Security, controls… and limits 🛡️
To reassure users, Spotify says every conversation request can be accepted or declined, with options to block contacts or even disable messaging entirely. Messages are encrypted in transit and stored securely, but—unlike WhatsApp or Signal—they’re not end-to-end encrypted. That means moderation teams can still step in if abuse is reported. Another limitation: you can only message people you’re already connected to through Spotify features, so this won’t become a free-for-all spam channel.
A social boost… but not what fans were asking for 🤷
With this update, Spotify is clearly doubling down on social engagement, hoping to make music sharing feel more natural and keep users spending more time in-app. But the elephant in the room remains: Hi-Fi audio. First announced years ago, it has been delayed so many times it’s practically mythical. Meanwhile, rivals already offer high-fidelity streaming. Instead of delivering on that, Spotify is betting that a messaging layer will be enough to keep users hooked.
Social evolution or just another gimmick? 📲
So here’s the million-stream question: did Spotify really need a chat feature? With messaging apps already crowding our phones and Hi-Fi still missing in action, this feels like a risky gamble. Spotify is banking on word-of-mouth recommendations becoming central to its platform—but whether that counts as innovation, or just a shiny distraction, is something only users can decide.
💬 What do you think?
Is Spotify’s new messaging tool a smart move or just noise? Should Hi-Fi have come first? Share your thoughts—we’d love to hear how you see the future of Spotify.
