AI takes over Spotify playlists 🤖

AI is invading our everyday lives. While we’re gradually getting used to using AIs to generate text or images, Spotify is now launching an AI to create playlists.

Turn your ideas into a playlist ✨

If you’re used to using streaming platforms, then you probably know how to create a playlist, by choosing your favorite tracks. These platforms also offer so-called algorithmic playlists, automatically generated according to your tastes. Thanks to these algorithmic playlists, you can also discover new music. However, you have less control over these playlists. What if there was an in-between? A playlist generated for you, but which you can adjust according to your tastes and moods? That’s the aim behind Spotify’s new AI Playlists feature.

As with tools such as ChatGPT, all you need is a command to generate a playlist. Looking for « an indie folk playlist to soothe my mind », « relaxing music to help me through allergy season » or « a playlist that makes me feel like the main character »? AI Playlists can create them. Thanks to its expertise in creating personalized playlists, Spotify takes artificial intelligence a step further. You can use commands referencing places, animals, activities, movie characters, colors and even emojis. The most successful playlists are generated from commands combining different genres, moods, artists or decades.

How to make an AI playlist?🤖

To find AI Playlist, head to the Spotify mobile app and select “Your Library” at the bottom-right corner of your screen.

  • From Your Library, tap the “+” button at the top-right corner of the app and select “AI Playlist.”
  • Select one of the suggested prompts or type your own. Get creative and be specific!
  • Wait for Spotify to do its magic and suggest tracks that match the vibe you’re looking for.
  • From there, you can easily manage the selection of songs by previewing and deleting tracks.
  • You can revise and refine the playlists you generate by telling AI Playlist what you’re looking for (i.e., “more pop” or “less upbeat”).
  • Tap “Create,” and your new playlist will be saved automatically in Your Library.

It’s important to note that the tool is still in beta and won’t produce results for non-music-related messages, such as news events or specific brands. In addition, Spotify has also introduced measures to deal with offensive messages.

Now that you’re all excited and eager to test this feature, it’s time for the cold shower. This feature is currently only available in the UK and Australia for premium users. Spotify plans to continue testing and improving the feature before making it available to all its users worldwide.
