Recent news of a $25 million cyber attack has left many in shock. The cybercriminals used a well-known technique: phishing. We explain what it’s all about in this week’s #AskGriots.
A cybercrime technique 🔫
Phishing is a cybercrime technique designed to trick users into providing personal or financial information. Hackers send emails, SMS or instant messages that appear to come from a legitimate source, such as a bank or e-commerce website.
They then entice users to click on a link or download an attachment that infects their device with malware or redirects them to a fake website.
A few preventive measures 🛡️
- Be suspicious: Never click on a link or download an attachment from an unknown source.
- Check the sender: Make sure the sender’s email address or phone number is legitimate.
- Hover over links: Before clicking on a link, hover your mouse over it to see the real URL.
- Use antivirus and firewall software: Install antivirus and firewall software on your device to protect against malware.
