On January 30, 2025, intimate videos of students from the Adventist College of Odza, in Yaoundé, leaked and spread on social media. Initially perceived as a private matter, the case quickly became a public phenomenon, sparking heated debates. A week later, the school held a disciplinary council and expelled 11 students.

A shocking situation 📲

The leaked videos depict compromising scenes involving several students, including one girl and multiple boys. They were recorded within the school premises, where the students are clearly seen wearing their uniforms. The nature of these images and their school setting have shocked parents, teachers, and even authorities. For many, this incident highlights gaps in digital security awareness.

The spread of the videos: a mystery yet to be solved 🔍

The exact way these videos were leaked remains unclear. Some sources claim that the students themselves recorded and shared the footage. Others suggest that the leak may have resulted from hacking or data theft from a mobile phone. Regardless of the cause, the situation raises serious concerns about the security of personal information in Cameroon.

Social media played a crucial role in this case. The videos were initially shared in private groups before rapidly going viral. This widespread distribution sparked online controversy, with internet users divided between demanding severe sanctions for those responsible for the leak and questioning the school’s accountability.

A call for strict measures 🏛️

The parents of the students involved in this scandal reacted strongly. They demanded explanations from the administration of the Adventist College of Odza and called for disciplinary action against those responsible for the leak. Some parents noted that the incident has deeply affected their children, leaving them feeling ashamed and stigmatized. One mother, whose child was tagged in a Facebook post about the incident, expressed her distress:

« What happened to my child is unacceptable. He was badly influenced by his peers, and now we have to deal with this difficult situation. The school must be more vigilant and better educate students about the dangers of digital exposure. »

Additionally, some parents interviewed on the matter emphasized the need for better digital education in schools:

« It is time for schools to take responsibility for cybersecurity. Our children spend too much time on social media without understanding the risks. How can we even explain that a student was somewhere else during class hours ? »

The school’s sanctions 🤔

The school’s administration has acknowledged the seriousness of the situation. On February 5, the school council handed down eight permanent expulsions and three one-year suspensions. The decisions were based on the involvement of 11 students in the incident while in uniform, the distribution of immoral videos, and alcohol consumption.

These actions were deemed even more serious as some students already had prior disciplinary records. In the presence of parents, teachers, and law enforcement officers, the school authorities applied the institution’s regulations. Their decision aims to uphold order and maintain the school’s values.

The Urgency of Digital Education 🆘

This scandal highlights a broader issue: the need for digital awareness and privacy management among young people in the internet era. This is not the first time such videos have been shared online in Cameroon. Similar incidents have occurred in the past, raising concerns about how schools address digital best practices and educate students on managing their personal data.

Young people today are more connected than ever, which increases the risks to their privacy.

« It is essential for schools to implement educational programs on responsible technology use. Additionally, parents must play a crucial role in teaching their children about the dangers of sharing intimate content without consent, » says Célestin Mbolo, a digital education coach.

Shared Responsibility 💼

Beyond digital education, this case also raises questions about the responsibility of educational institutions. The Adventist College of Odza, like all schools, has a duty to ensure the safety of its students—including in the digital space. « This includes protecting personal data and educating students about the risks of sharing intimate images and videos, » adds Célestin.

Experts also stress that parents must remain vigilant and ensure their children use the internet responsibly. Open conversations about the risks of posting private content online are crucial. Prevention remains a key tool in avoiding such scandals.

What Do You Think ?
