Influencers in Cameroon: between authentic stars and advertising showcases ✨

With the rise of social media, Cameroonian influencers are becoming more and more visible. They gather thousands, even millions of followers on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. Whether in fashion, music, tech, or lifestyle, they set trends and attract the attention of brands. But are they true trendsetters or merely disguised advertising tools?

Rapid rise through social media🚀

In the past, one needed television or radio to make a name for oneself. Today, a simple smartphone and creative content are enough to break through. Thanks to viral videos, challenges, and collaborations, some influencers have built a real community. They manage to engage millions of people and generate interactions.

« Before, you had to go through TV or radio to be known. Today, with a smartphone and a good idea, you can become a star on TikTok. The more we engage internet users, the more money we make. It has already become a source of income for some people, » explains Lionel, a community manager.

Personalities like Moustik le Karismatik, Steve Fah, Brenda Biya, Maalhox, Murielle Blanche, Marcelle Kuetche, Ulrich Takam, Monsieur Chantal, and Lady Ponce stand out for their humor and commitment. Their influence extends far beyond simple entertainment. They combine humor with marketing for various businesses they have launched thanks to their popularity.

Influence in the service of brands 💰

Given their growing popularity, brands quickly took an interest in them. Hidden advertisements, product placements, endorsements, and promo codes have become common practice. The goal is to reach a targeted audience and boost sales.

« I discovered a cosmetics brand through an influencer. I tried it, and honestly, it’s quite effective. Even though the prices are not affordable for everyone, it’s manageable if you save enough, » says Vanessa, a student.

But there is a downside. Some influencers do not disclose that they are paid to promote a product, which can mislead their followers. This lack of transparency raises doubts about their sincerity and the accuracy of the information they share.

Between engagement and controversies 🔥

While some influencers take a stand on social issues like entrepreneurship or inequalities, others are mostly known for controversies. Their luxurious lifestyles, shocking statements, or questionable partnerships are frequently criticized.

« Sometimes, we don’t know if an influencer is here to inspire or just to show off their wealth. We see people who constantly flaunt their possessions without revealing how they acquired them. Since young people are curious, they want to follow the example of someone who may be engaging in dubious activities behind the scenes just to maintain a public image, » observes Jules, an entrepreneur.

Accusations of scams, promotion of dubious training programs, or even clashes between influencers damage the industry’s reputation. The lack of regulation also allows various excesses to thrive.

What future for influence in Cameroon? 🔮

However, to remain credible, Cameroonian influencers must find a balance between authenticity and commercial collaborations. On their side, internet users must learn to analyze advertising messages and not be blinded by appearances.

It is evident that the influencer industry in Cameroon is undergoing a major transformation. The question remains whether it will continue to inspire or become a mere marketing tool, devoid of its essence. Especially since the role models available are not always the best examples to follow.
