Cameroonian whistleblowers have taken on a central role in exposing cases of corruption, abuse of power, social injustices, and governance failures. Figures such as Peupah Zouzoua, N’zui Manto, Boris Bertolt, and Paul Chouta have become popular voices, often at the forefront of media scandals. However, while their work has undeniable impact, it also raises questions about the accuracy of their information and the methods they use to disclose it.
The rise of Cameroonian whistleblowers 🚀
In Cameroon, access to information is often limited by political and economic constraints. As a result, the traditional press is subject to strong pressures, sometimes preventing the dissemination of sensitive information. It is precisely in this media void that whistleblowers have found their place. Through Facebook, Telegram, and YouTube, they publish investigations and testimonies, often accompanied by confidential documents.
« Before, we had to wait for the television news to get the latest updates. Today, with social media, information circulates instantly. We even get access to confidential details. On these pages, it’s raw sharing, » says Lionel, an internet user.
Their strength lies in their ability to mobilize public opinion. Within hours, a publication can reach thousands of views, sometimes forcing authorities or institutions involved to respond. For example, some revelations by Boris Bertolt on embezzlement have led to official investigations, even if these remain rare.
Influential and committed figures 🎧
Each whistleblower has their own style and area of focus. For instance, Peupah Zouzoua is known for his direct approach and denunciations of social injustices, particularly in health and local governance. N’zui Manto, on the other hand, stands out with his sharp political analyses and outspoken coverage of current events. Boris Bertolt, exiled in France, regularly publishes information on power dynamics. Meanwhile, Paul Chouta, working closer to the ground, focuses on crime reports and police misconduct.
However, their commitment does not go unnoticed. Many face threats, harassment, and even arrests. For example, Paul Chouta has been imprisoned multiple times, often following complaints filed by influential figures.
Work without journalistic guarantees 🧐
While whistleblowers deserve credit for exposing facts that might otherwise remain hidden, their methods do not always align with journalistic principles. Unlike professional media, they are not bound by strict fact-checking obligations. Consequently, some information they share may be incomplete, misinterpreted, or even inaccurate.
« We don’t always know if what they say is true or if they have a hidden agenda. Many have found themselves embroiled in scandals. Lawsuits have been filed against some, but that’s not enough to stop them, » says Estelle, a communications specialist.
For example, some of Boris Bertolt’s accusations have been debunked or called into question, casting doubt on his credibility. Similarly, the political motivations of certain whistleblowers are sometimes scrutinized. Some accuse them of serving particular interests or being used as tools by factions opposed to the government.
The trap of sensationalism 🎭
Another frequent criticism concerns the sometimes alarmist tone of their publications. To capture attention, some do not hesitate to use catchy headlines or exaggerate certain facts. While this approach is effective in generating buzz, it can ultimately undermine their credibility.
Moreover, the lack of a clear legal framework regarding the status of whistleblowers in Cameroon exposes them to legal action, limiting their operational freedom. Without official protection, they are often seen as mere bloggers or activists rather than legitimate actors in the media landscape.
A real impact on public opinion 📣
Despite these criticisms, it must be acknowledged that whistleblowers have changed the way information is consumed in Cameroon. They have shed light on sensitive issues and alerted the population to practices that would otherwise have remained in the shadows.
« Today, thanks to social media, no one is untouchable. A simple video can bring down a corrupt official. These people seem to have spies everywhere, » explains Jean-Claude, a follower of online news.
In response to this evolution, authorities have adopted various strategies. Some attempt to discredit these figures, while others seek to tighten control over online content.
Should Cameroonian whistleblowers be regulated and protected? In other countries, specific laws exist to protect those who expose matters of public interest. However, in Cameroon, their status remains ambiguous, leaving them vulnerable to retaliation. Some advocate for regulations that would ensure both their freedom of expression and a certain level of accountability in their publications. Others, however, argue that any form of regulation could be used as a pretext to further restrict press freedom.
Between hope and uncertainty 🤔
Cameroonian whistleblowers have become key players in the dissemination of information. They challenge the established order and give a voice to the voiceless. However, their work raises major concerns regarding credibility, ethics, and legal protection.
While they remain essential for a more transparent public debate, their future will depend on their ability to balance civic engagement with journalistic rigor.
