The new Android security features, announced in May, are gradually rolling out worldwide. They make phone theft less lucrative through a series of improvements aimed at better securing devices.

Three New Features to Combat Theft 🛡️

Google is introducing a trio of features on Android to make phone theft less effective and protect user data. These new tools, which are starting to appear on several Android phones, focus on the following aspects :

  • Theft Protection: Using the accelerometer, your phone can detect a sudden motion, like a snatch-and-grab theft. If detected, the device locks automatically, preventing access to data during quick thefts.
  • Offline Lock: This feature prevents a thief from making your phone unreachable by enabling airplane mode or taking it offline. If the device remains disconnected for a while, it automatically locks, making it harder for thieves to exploit.
  • Simplified Remote Lock: An improvement of the existing « Find My Device » tool, this feature allows you to lock your phone remotely by simply using your linked phone number, without needing to access your Google account.

Where to Activate These Features ? 📱

These new protections are rolling out to all Android phones starting from version 10. To check if your phone supports these options, go to Settings, under the Google submenu, then Device Security. If applicable, the « Theft Protection » option will be visible. However, the feature is only available if the user activates it.

For those who don’t see these features yet, don’t worry. Software updates may take a few weeks. You just need to wait to benefit from these new protections.
