Meet ChatGPT’s Agent: The AI assistant that actually gets things done 🤖

On July 17, 2025, OpenAI unveiled a major update to its AI product lineup. During a live demo, CEO Sam Altman and OpenAI engineers introduced ChatGPT Agent, a powerful new feature designed to revolutionize how users interact with virtual assistants. Tailored for Pro and Plus subscribers, Agent brings together autonomy, versatility, and real-time collaboration in one streamlined experience.

Designed for complex, multi-step tasks 🧩

Until now, ChatGPT has mostly excelled at answering direct questions or helping with focused tasks. Agent changes the game. It’s built to handle longer, more complex, and multi-step requests — the kinds of tasks that can’t be solved in a single answer.

Instead of offering instant responses, Agent tackles projects that can take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the complexity. In one demo, for example, a user asked the AI to help plan their attendance at a wedding. Agent found a dress-code-appropriate outfit, booked a hotel, and suggested a gift. It then generated a detailed report that pulled everything together, showcasing its ability to juggle multiple interconnected tasks.

Deep integration with the tools you already use 🔗

But Agent isn’t just smarter — it’s more connected. Thanks to integrations with Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Calendar, it can now do much more than just make suggestions. Agent can pull data, draft documents, and schedule events, all on its own.

In another example from the demo, Agent built a slideshow presentation using content pulled from a Google Doc, complete with visuals created by the AI itself. That kind of seamless versatility positions Agent as a true cross-functional assistant, equally at ease managing your calendar or building creative assets.

Transparent, real-time reasoning you can follow 🖥️

One of the most compelling features of Agent is its transparency. OpenAI has added a live activity window where users can see exactly what the AI is doing: what it’s searching for, what websites it’s visiting, and how it’s thinking through a task — almost like watching a screen share from the AI itself.

Even better, you’re not just a spectator. You can interact with Agent while it works: provide new information, tweak instructions, or even pivot to an entirely new task mid-process. That flexibility makes the experience feel dynamic, responsive, and personalized.

Safety controls keep you in charge 🛑

Of course, giving an AI this much autonomy raises real concerns — and OpenAI knows it. That’s why Agent comes with built-in guardrails. For example, it can’t send emails or take sensitive actions without your explicit confirmation. These approval steps are designed to minimize mistakes and prevent misunderstandings, putting the user firmly in control.

Rolling out soon for Pro and Plus users 🚀

Agent will be available soon under the “Tools” tab on both desktop and mobile. It’s exclusive to ChatGPT Pro and Plus subscribers, and while no exact launch date has been confirmed, it’s a clear step in OpenAI’s larger mission: to position ChatGPT as much more than just a chatbot.

With Agent, OpenAI is pushing beyond conversational AI into something far more practical — an assistant that can act, adapt, and collaborate in real time. It’s an exciting look at where personal AI is headed.

👉 So, what’s the first task you’d delegate to ChatGPT Agent?
