After the 2016 elections and the victory of Donald Trump as President of the United States, Facebook had undergone a wave of criticism especially because of the Fakes News that frequently circulate there. Since then, Mark Zuckerberg’s company has been trying to improve its image. For that, it does not hesitate to communicate on all the efforts put in place to reduce the spread of fake news. In the same dynamic, the company tries to be more transparent by regularly publishing a report on the most shared links on its platform.

Hide this report that I cannot see 🙈

The New York Times recently revealed that Facebook had backed away from publishing a report on the most viewed links on its platform in the U.S. in the first quarter. You’ll agree with me that this is pretty shady.

In this report, the most viewed article, titled « Healthy Doctor Dies Two Weeks After Receiving Covid-19 Vaccine; CDC Investigates », suggested a causal relationship between the Covid vaccination and the death of a doctor in Florida. The article was notably viewed by 54 million Facebook accounts in the United States. In the midst of the Covid crisis and as various governments are working to accelerate vaccination, Facebook’s management was concerned that this report would taint its image.

The group finally published the report, after the press revelations. This blunder does not come at an ideal time for Facebook. Indeed, the American president Joe Biden had estimated that Facebook and other platforms were « killing » people by letting false medical information spread on their services. Mark Zuckerberg didn’t hesitate to answer « The facts show that Facebook helps save lives, period ».t« .

Do you still trust Facebook ? 🧐

Today, Facebook is the largest social network in the world.  The group also owns applications like Instagram, or WhatsApp that many people use to communicate on a daily basis. Moreover, the group is multiplying its efforts on virtual reality and the metaverse, which is perhaps the future of social networks.

With great power comes great responsibility, and with all the dirt on Facebook, do you still trust Mark Zuckerberg’s company ?
