Why and how to use emojis in your communication? 🤔These are all questions that come up regularly: what are emojis for? And why have they become so essential? And how can they be integrated into content created and distributed on social networks and the web? How can they be used on a daily basis?

First of all, a little reminder: No, the emoji (pronounced « emodji ») is not or no longer a youth « thing ». In fact, they appeared many years ago and have become one of the universal languages and have invaded communication and the web! Whether we like them or not, they are not about to disappear. On the contrary!

So, what if we took a closer look at the development of their use?  Their variations! Here we go!

Emojis for an interactive experience 🤗📱

Unless you have a perfect command of written expression, it is sometimes difficult to give a tone or a context to your content. Right? So emojis give meaning to what you write. They are like our language superheroes, the perfect example of non-verbal communication. This would even be the best analogy between the non-verbal emojis and real life:

« It’s exactly the same as the smile you give after a joke. «

When used properly, they will convey an emotion (joy, anger, etc.) or even propagate it if the aim is to titillate the brain.

In other words, these are the reactions that certain emojis seek to activate and which are transposed onto your favourite applications.

Over time, we have learned to reclaim these emojis: emoji reactions. They make messages more punchy, more eloquent, more empathetic.🤗

Yes, it must be said that our favourite platforms (WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, Slack,…) facilitate this use of emojis commonly called « lightning responses ».  And even if we are witnessing a democratization of emojis and a more than playful use, they can also limit them in the sense that this type of interaction interrupts the discussions. A bit frustrating if a serious discussion is in progress.

Nevertheless, a reaction is better than a message left in « Seen ».😅

Emojis as a « Language Opinion 📢📋

In an effort to make communication ever more lively, emojis are invading the most unsuspecting spheres. Indeed, if we try to make a flashback, you will agree with us that the presence of emojis in questionnaires and surveys was not acceptable. We were totally opposed to it. But in the spirit of proximity and universality, we can no longer do without them.

Did you know that emojis guarantee a high success rate in surveys without harming the nature of the real information? That they also reduce dropout rates and help to complete a study ? 😉

You get the idea! Making surveys « fun » is something you should do intelligently. So the presence of emojis will keep them fun throughout the process and could turn them from boring to enjoyable.👌🏾👍🏾

A very concrete example: You have to vote for a common activity, the participants a bit busy. What to do? And time is short ⏱! Simple, you proceed with an emoji vote 📥. Quick and highly efficient, it makes life easier.  A list of suggestions, a small emoji to indicate your preference and that’s it.✅✅✅

Another example ladies. You like an article and you are not so sure: a photo, emojis (👍🏾👎🏾) and let the vote take place and make your choice with more reassurance.

If this applies to surveys, it is the same for satisfaction scales on social networks so that you are totally involved in the evolution of a brand?

Emojis have taken over: it’s Done!

Rules for using emoji on social networks📋📱

As you know, emojis are used for all types of communication as long as they respect the rules and fit the context as well.

However, it is important to follow a few tips:

  • Keep it simple 😉

This advice also applies to the use of emojis for reactions as well as for polls and ratings. As much as you can be exuberant, their interpretation can be wrong. We’d really like to avoid that.

  • Avoiding an overdose😫

An emoji that fits into a survey helps to capture the context, but emojis galore could annoy your audience.

  • Consider the profile of your audience 😇

If your feedback, polls and surveys are aimed at a specific audience, emojis are a great way to connect with them.

  • Stand out to get noticed 🤩

Are you a brand or business looking to improve your community engagement? Go for it!

To conclude, emojis definitely give your messages, your surveys a little something that makes them more attractive. But don’t overuse them. It would be counterproductive: you would blur your communication instead of clarifying it.

What about you? Which emoji user are you? Are you addicted or allergic?
