Last Wednesday, Microsoft took advantage of its Fall Surface 2022 event to announce the launch of a new tool: Microsoft Designer. As its name suggests, this new application is entirely dedicated to graphic design.
Microsoft Designer, a new tool dedicated to graphic design 💻🖌
With its new tool, Microsoft wants to give everyone the opportunity to create graphic visuals, in a simple and intuitive way. With Designer, you can, for example, create publications for social networks, slideshows, graphics, flyers … To facilitate the task, Microsoft provides various templates, but it is quite possible to start with a blank page.
To access Designer, Microsoft has provided two options:
- A free plan accessible via the web,
- A premium version, integrated with Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscriptions.
Currently, you have the opportunity to sign up for a waiting list to test Designer.
An AI-powered design service👩🏾💻
With its new graphic design application, Microsoft wants to go further. In fact, Designer includes options based on artificial intelligence, including the DALL-E 2 tool, developed by OpenAI. Thus, thanks to this tool, the user will be able to write a description sentence and the solution will automatically generate various corresponding visual designs. This will save even more time for content creators, but above all it will take graphic design to a higher level!
Microsoft Create: When Design and Competition Mix
A new site called Microsoft Create, bringing together all of Microsoft’s authoring tools in one platform (Microsoft Designer, Clipchamp, PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Forms) is available to everyone, starting today!
This new release comes shortly after the launch of Canva’s new creative suite, Canva Visual Worksuite, which you can discover by clicking here. It includes collaboration tools similar to those of the Office suite: Canva Docs, Presentations, Videos… A replica or just a coincidence?
Is Microsoft trying to get ahead of the game before Canva steps on its toes? On the startup’s side, its co-founder Cliff Obrecht, clarified that Canva was not in competition with Microsoft, its main opponent being Adobe, in a September interview mentioned by the media CNBC.
In addition, it should be noted that Microsoft maintains a strong partnership with Adobe: « Adobe remains our key strategic partner, at scale, and this new consumer design application does not change our commitment to Adobe, » a Microsoft spokesperson told CNBC in an email.
It remains to be seen how Microsoft Designer will fare in the coveted graphic design market!
