Algeria accelerates its shift to IPv6 🇩🇿 🌐

Algeria’s Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Sid Ali Zerrouki, used a recent meeting on the country’s internet future to reaffirm the government’s push to modernize its digital infrastructure. At the center of the discussion: expanding the availability of IP addresses, the unique identifiers every connected device needs to communicate online.
IPv6 takes center stage 🚀
The meeting, held in partnership with the African Network Information Centre (AFRINIC), brought together Algeria’s AFRINIC members and key players from the country’s digital sector. Talks covered internet governance, the protection of national digital resources, and Algeria’s standing within African and international bodies overseeing the internet.
One topic dominated: accelerating the shift to IPv6, the protocol set to gradually replace IPv4. Every device that connects to the internet — a smartphone, a laptop, a networked camera — needs a unique IP address to communicate on the network.
As the number of connected devices keeps climbing worldwide, IPv4’s limited address pool is running out. IPv6 was built to solve exactly that problem, offering a far larger supply of addresses to meet future demand.
What exactly is IPv6? 💻
Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) is the latest version of the addressing system that underpins the internet. Its job: assign a unique address to every connected device, whether that’s a phone, a computer, a server, or an IoT sensor.
It succeeds IPv4, whose limited pool of addresses can no longer keep pace with the growth in connected hardware. With a vastly larger address space — on the order of 340 undecillion possible addresses — IPv6 is designed to support billions of new devices. Beyond sheer volume, the protocol is also said to make data routing more efficient.
Expected gains for users and networks 📡
According to the ministry, adopting IPv6 would allow Algerian networks to support a much larger number of connected devices. The shift would also accompany rising smartphone and IoT usage, supporting the rollout of next-generation digital services — and, in some cases, improving overall connectivity performance.
The ministry also frames IPv6 as foundational infrastructure for emerging technologies, one that would underpin next-generation networks and smart cities going forward.
Modernizing digital infrastructure 🏗️
As of September 2025, Algeria counted 60.4 million internet subscriptions, according to official figures — a number that outstrips the country’s population, estimated by the World Bank at 47.4 million. That gap is largely explained by people holding multiple SIM cards or lines. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) put Algeria’s internet penetration rate at 77.4% in 2024.
« Just as every household needs its own address, every device connected to the internet — a phone, a computer, a camera, a smart device — also needs its own digital address, » the Algerian Ministry of Post and Telecommunications explained in a statement posted on Facebook.
Following the meeting, Zerrouki reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continuing the modernization of the country’s digital infrastructure — a move officials say would also strengthen network security and reinforce Algeria’s digital sovereignty.
