Will music lyrics soon be available only for Premium subscribers on Spotify? 🎙️

Although Spotify is the market leader in streaming, the platform is still looking to attract as many premium subscribers as possible in order to generate revenue. Having tried exclusive content, it is now exploring other options.

Some Spotify users recently got a nasty surprise on the application. The lyrics under the tracks have been replaced by the message « Enjoy lyrics on Spotify Premium ».

In a statement to The Verge, CJ Stanley, co-head of global communications at Spotify, said:

At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests, some of those tests end up paving the way for our broader user experience and others serve only as an important learning […] We don’t have any further news to share at this time[…] In keeping with our standard practices, we’re currently testing this with a limited number of users in a pair of markets”

So don’t panic, this is just a test, at least for now. In fact, depending on the results, Spotify may consider rolling out this feature to all its free users. As Spotify is still not profitable, the platform is doing everything it can to get as many users as possible to sign up for a subscription.

Pending the global roll-out of features such as AI DJ (which you can find out more about by clicking here), Spotify is testing access to user-valued features via the Premium subscription.
