ChatGPT Plus: new limits designed to make you pay? 💰

Cliquez ici pour lire en français

Artificial intelligence is fascinating. But it’s also a business. And OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, seems determined to remind us that its tools aren’t free out of sheer generosity.
In recent days, many free users have started noticing new kinds of limitations… and that’s probably no coincidence.

Smart limits… or strategic restrictions ?🤔

Imagine this: you’re using ChatGPT for free as usual, but suddenly, instead of getting an answer, you’re told that the feature is reserved for Plus subscribers.
That’s exactly what some users have experienced. Translation: specific queries—like generating images with DALL·E—might soon be limited or entirely off-limits for free users. The message is loud and clear: if you want full access, you’ll have to pay.

It looks a lot like A/B testing: OpenAI is trying out different interface variations to observe user behavior. A well-known strategy in the SaaS world, and a strong signal about where ChatGPT’s business model is headed.

AI-generated images… soon watermarked for life? 🖼️🔏

Another hot topic: AI-generated images. OpenAI is reportedly considering embedding invisible watermarks in some images created with DALL·E.
Why? To help trace the origin of the content in case of misuse or misinformation.

It’s a preventative move, aiming to regulate usage while reassuring policymakers. It echoes similar efforts by Google and Meta to label AI-generated content. The difference here: OpenAI’s watermarking would be invisible to the naked eye but detectable by specific tools.

ChatGPT Plus: premium upgrade in full swing

Behind all these changes lies a simple idea: add more value to the paid offer. At $20/month, ChatGPT Plus is becoming more than just early access—it’s turning into a full-fledged premium product, with better capabilities, fewer restrictions, and possibly… exclusive features on the horizon.

The free tier still has its value, but it’s clearly evolving into a gateway product, designed to lure users toward a paid experience. Nothing new—Spotify, YouTube, and Netflix have done the same.

Time to worry or time to adapt? 🔮

OpenAI is following a classic business strategy: make the product more profitable. Nothing shocking there—but it does raise a valid concern: how far will the divide between free and paid versions go?
And more importantly: are we heading toward a two-tier AI world, where only paying users access the best tools?

What Do You Think? 💬
Is OpenAI right to limit the free version to better highlight its paid offering? Would that push you to subscribe—or to look for alternatives instead?
