As usual, the tech giants, in their unbridled rivalry, are constantly copying the slightest popular feature from their competitors. WhatsApp has announced the partial roll-out of its new « Channels » feature, a way of communicating with celebrities and organisations.

WhatsApp channels: Communication’s new relay service🔄️

« We are pleased to introduce WhatsApp Channels, a simple, reliable and private way to receive important news from people and organisations on our platform, » reads the official blog post published on 8 June.

WhatsApp has announced the launch of channels, a « one-way » broadcasting tool. Channels can be followed from a directory or by invitation. They will be an appropriate way for celebrities, official organisations, sports teams, NGOs or even local organisations to broadcast their messages and publish content, such as text, photos, videos, stickers, a list of activities or offer polls to their audience.

If you’re a regular Telegram user, you probably already know how it works. These are discussion channels to which users subscribe in order to receive regular messages and other news from the administrators.
Not only will you be able to follow official organisations or public figures, but you will also be able to join threads that focus on a particular theme (cooking, tontine, thought of the day, entrepreneurship, mediation, volunteering, etc.).
The channels will be accessible in a separate area from Discussions and Communities, and will appear in a new tab called ‘News’.
This new service should enable the Californian group Meta to relaunch its ultra-popular messaging service in certain regions of the world (notably Africa and Latin America), but much less so in the United States, after a difficult year in 2022 marked by the first decline in its advertising revenues since it was floated on the stock market in 2012.

WhatsApp Channels: between privacy and ephemeral messages🔐

You have specific questions about WhatsApp Channels: are they secure? Private or not?
TechGriot has the answer by telling you that these are private channels that meet specific criteria:
  • No disclosure of the administrator’s identity (number, profile photo) to the channel’s followers. « You decide which channels you want to follow, and your choices are private, » explains WhatsApp.
NB: Administrators will be able to choose whether or not to accept new members wishing to follow their channel, and will decide whether or not their channel will be visible in the public directory.
  • Ephemeral storage for 30 days: WhatsApp believes that « channel news does not need to last forever ». However, administrators will be able to block screenshots and uploads to their channels.
  • No end-to-end encryption to reach « a large audience », although WhatsApp is considering introducing this option for smaller channels.

The channels are simply a response to a demand that has existed for several years and offer a simple, reliable and private broadcasting tool.

What do we know about their availability?🤔

WhatsApp is gradually rolling out its channels, starting with Colombia and Singapore.

« To get off to a good start, and with a view to learning and developing this experience, we’re going to start by working with leading personalities and organisations ».

The channels and the ability to create them will be launched in other countries « in the coming months ». Eventually, the idea will also be to « enable admins to make money from their channels » by monetising them.
As you will have realised, these channels are aimed above all at organisations that want to stay close to their subscribers, as well as subscribers who want to keep up to date with news about their brand, current or forthcoming events, their favourite activity, or simply a group of enthusiasts discussing their shared hobby.
