As usual, the tech giants, in their unbridled rivalry, are constantly copying the slightest popular feature from their competitors. WhatsApp has announced the partial roll-out of its new « Channels » feature, a way of communicating with celebrities and organisations.
WhatsApp channels: Communication’s new relay service🔄️
« We are pleased to introduce WhatsApp Channels, a simple, reliable and private way to receive important news from people and organisations on our platform, » reads the official blog post published on 8 June.
WhatsApp has announced the launch of channels, a « one-way » broadcasting tool. Channels can be followed from a directory or by invitation. They will be an appropriate way for celebrities, official organisations, sports teams, NGOs or even local organisations to broadcast their messages and publish content, such as text, photos, videos, stickers, a list of activities or offer polls to their audience.
WhatsApp Channels: between privacy and ephemeral messages🔐
- No disclosure of the administrator’s identity (number, profile photo) to the channel’s followers. « You decide which channels you want to follow, and your choices are private, » explains WhatsApp.
- Ephemeral storage for 30 days: WhatsApp believes that « channel news does not need to last forever ». However, administrators will be able to block screenshots and uploads to their channels.
- No end-to-end encryption to reach « a large audience », although WhatsApp is considering introducing this option for smaller channels.
The channels are simply a response to a demand that has existed for several years and offer a simple, reliable and private broadcasting tool.
What do we know about their availability?🤔
WhatsApp is gradually rolling out its channels, starting with Colombia and Singapore.
« To get off to a good start, and with a view to learning and developing this experience, we’re going to start by working with leading personalities and organisations ».
