The golden age of streaming is well and truly behind us. As the number of services multiplies, the major players are making decisions that are not to the liking of users. After Netflix, it’s Disney+’s turn to raise its rates.
Disney+ prices rise and advertising makes its debut🤑
Initially announced for the United States in December 2022, the Disney+ price increase is now spreading to other countries, including France from December 1. Subscribers will be able to choose between three pricing options, one of which includes ads:
- Disney+ Standard with ads (€5.99 per month): identical to the standard package, but without the download function;
- Disney+ Standard (€8.99/month): 1080p content, 5.1 sound, download and simultaneous broadcast on 2 screens;
- Disney+ Premium (€11.99 per month): 4K HDR content, Dolby Atmos sound, download and streaming on 4 screens.
Unlike Netflix, all packages offer full access to the Disney+ catalog. However, only the Standard and Premium packages offer annual subscriptions with 2 months free. Advertising breaks can last up to 4 minutes per hour; content specifically aimed at young children remains commercial-free.
Disney+ takes aim at account sharing
Disney+ will follow in Netflix’s footsteps by ending account sharing. At a meeting with shareholders, Disney CEO Bob Iger also hinted at another major change for the streaming platform: the end of account sharing.
« We are actively exploring ways to address account sharing and the best options for paying subscribers to share their accounts with friends and family, » said Bob Iger. « Later this year, we will begin updating our subscription contracts with additional terms and conditions and our sharing policies. »
This leaves little room for uncertainty about the company’s intentions when it comes to account sharing. After the success of this initiative at Netflix, it was inevitable that other platforms would follow suit. All that’s left now is to be patient.
