Snapchat is putting a price on your Memories 💸

Snapchat is shaking things up: after years of letting users stash unlimited photos and videos in its digital vault, the app is finally putting a cap on free storage. That endless library of Snaps you’ve been hoarding? It’s about to come with quotas, subscriptions—and some tough choices. What’s actually changing, why now, and what can you do if you don’t want to pay? Let’s break it down.

Goodbye unlimited storage 📦

Snapchat announced that free Memories storage will now be capped at 5GB for everyone. If you go beyond that, you’ll need to sign up for a paid plan to keep saving everything. The shift comes after nearly a trillion Memories have been backed up since the feature launched in 2016. Translation: Snapchat’s success has become too expensive to host for free.

What subscription options are on the table? 💸

Like Apple’s iCloud or Google Photos, Snapchat is moving to a tiered storage model. Here’s what the plans look like:

  • 100GB for around €2/month.
  • 250GB, bundled with Snapchat+ at €4/month.
  • 5TB, available with Snapchat Platinum (not yet rolled out everywhere).

For most casual users, the free 5GB will be more than enough. But if you’re a power user—or someone who documents literally everything—your choices are clear: pay up, or start cleaning house.

Don’t panic: there’s a grace period 🕒

To ease the transition, Snapchat is giving anyone over the new 5GB limit 12 months of temporary storage. During that time, you can either back up your Memories locally, subscribe, or trim down your library. After the grace period ends, anything over the cap will be automatically deleted—starting with your newest Snaps, while older ones will remain intact.

Why this strategic pivot? 🧐

At its core, this is about cost and revenue. Storing trillions of photos and videos isn’t cheap, and Snapchat has been gradually exploring ways to monetize beyond ads—think premium filters, Lens+, and now storage. In many ways, it’s simply catching up with what Apple and Google have already made standard practice.

Snapchat’s end of “everything free” marks a turning point. The platform is no longer just a place to collect every Snap forever—it’s asking users to make active decisions: curate, archive, or pay. A new era is beginning, one where your digital memories come with a price tag.

So, what do you think? Is it worth paying to keep every Snap, or is this the push you needed to start decluttering? Would you stick around, or jump ship?
