Pope Leo XIV is set to arrive in Cameroon from April 15 to April 17. Even before touching down, the announcement of this pastoral visit has already taken over social media, capturing collective attention and shaping digital trends. Everything suggests that the sovereign pontiff will continue to dominate the online conversation even after his departure, given the remarkable momentum already building.

“When Pope John Paul II touched my baby, he started walking.” This powerful testimony from Bernadette Mbarga is among the most viral pieces of content linked to Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Cameroon. Shared by Canal 2 Internationale and relayed by Médiatude, the report generated over 1,400 reactions and more than 37 shares—clear evidence of the emotional and symbolic weight of this visit.

On Canal 2 Internationale’s official Facebook page, nearly 14 posts related to the event were recorded in just four days. Meanwhile, the digital platform CRTVweb stood out with around 11 publications within a 24-hour span between April 13 and April 14. This reflects the intense media mobilization surrounding the event across the country.

Cameroonian bloggers and influencers have also joined the digital wave. While some focus on religious awareness, others tap into patriotic sentiment, celebrating “the strength of the Kontineng” (a popular nickname for Cameroon). A post titled “HOLIGOSS NEWS‼️ Pope Leo XIV left Rome this morning ahead of his upcoming visit to Cameroon…” published by widely followed creator Peupah Zouzoua gathered nearly 15,000 likes, over 2,000 comments, and around 50 shares.

On TikTok, the energy is just as intense. From humorous clips and informational videos to critical takes—particularly around the rising prices of event-related merchandise—the platform is flooded with diverse content. This variety plays a key role in amplifying the algorithmic visibility of the papal visit.

The papamobile, the pope’s iconic vehicle, hasn’t escaped the conversation either. Some posts, often laced with irony or skepticism, question whether it will be able to navigate certain roads in cities like Douala and Bamenda. These discussions continue to fuel debates and online engagement.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp reveals another layer of the phenomenon. According to observations from a TechGriot journalist, about 70% of statuses within a sample of 100 contacts have referenced the pope’s visit since the beginning of April. This highlights how deeply the event has penetrated private communication spaces.

When asked about their motivations, some users point to spiritual reasons. “I have to spread the message as much as possible—it’s the work of the Lord. I can earn blessings through my statuses,” says Gladys Nga. Others, like Bertin Mendouga, see it as a way to signal awareness: “It’s just to show that I’m informed, up to date.”
