Social networks are nothing new to Meta. The company founded by Mark Zuckerberg, formerly known as Facebook, is the parent company of two of the biggest social networks on the planet: Facebook and Instagram. However, rumors have it that a new social network is in the works, to offer an alternative to Twitter.

A decentralized version of Twitter in the image of Instagram

According to information from Bloomberg, Meta is working on an alternative to Twitter. Unlike Twitter, this new platform would be decentralized and compatible with other competing platforms such as Mastodon.

The application, whose official name is not yet known, will require a connection via an Instagram account. Given that Facebook users are already familiar with the text format, we can assume that Meta is primarily seeking to attract users to its photo-sharing platform. The first images of the platform’s interface, which is very reminiscent of Instagram’s, corroborate this idea.

The screenshot shared by Lia Haberman on Twitter also gives us some information on how the platform works. It shows that texts will have a maximum limit of 500 characters.

An application closely tied to Instagram

This screenshot shows just how closely this new social network will be tied to Instagram. Users will be able to import all their data from Instagram onto the new app, including their followers, handle and biography. In addition, accounts blocked on Instagram will also be blocked on the new platform. Masked words, which offer protection against abuse, will also be transferred to the platform.

Similarly, users who have already passed identity verification on Instagram to certify their account will not need to repeat the whole process on the new platform.
The platform is currently being tested in secret with celebrities and influencers. An announcement is expected by the end of June.
What do you think of this news? If the app is finally launched, would you consider testing it? Let us know in the comments.
