X (ex-Twitter) unveils new ad-free subscription plan 🚫

Some time ago, we learned that X (formerly Twitter) was testing a new annual subscription for all users. The social network, now under the control of Elon Musk, recently unveiled two new monthly subscription plans.

X needs to refloat its accounts 💰

Twitter, now X, has never been a profitable platform. Before the takeover by Elon Musk, the platform’s revenues came exclusively from advertising. However, since the takeover, many advertisers have left the platform. This is one of the reasons why the businessman is trying to find new sources of revenue.

The Twitter Blue subscription, which later became X Premium and was billed at €8/month, was supposed to attract a large number of users, not least thanks to the blue badge. However, according to independent researcher Travis Brown, Twitter only has around 1 million paying subscribers. Given that X claims 550 million active users, this is a real failure.

X recently announced it was testing an annual subscription (which you can find out more about by clicking here) in two countries. Although the reason given is the fight against bots, it’s clear that the generalization of this measure would constitute a cash inflow for the platform. But the low cost of €1/year would probably not be enough. X has therefore decided to introduce not one, but two new monthly subscriptions.

A basic subscription and an ad-free subscription 🚫

Currently, a Premium subscription is available on X for €8/month (or €84/year). In addition to the blue certification badge, it offers features designed to enhance the experience, such as:

  • Edit a publication after it has been posted.
  • Publish longer content.
  • Play videos in the background.
  • Benefit from a remuneration program for creators.
  • Customize the application.

X recently unveiled two new subscriptions to complement its existing offering: « Basic » and « Premium+ ».

The « Premium+ » subscription offers the same features as the Premium subscription, but for twice the price (€16/month or €168/year), you’ll get no more ads displayed, as well as a maximum boost in responses on the platform.

As for the « Basic » subscription, as the name suggests, it includes the basic functions of the Premium subscription. Subscribers will be able to edit publications and make them longer, but will not have access to the Creators’ Hub or the verification badge.

With these new subscriptions, X hopes to attract new users and replenish its coffers in the process. However, it’s very difficult to convert users used to paying nothing into subscribers.

If you’re an X user, what do you think of these new subscriptions? More generally, what do you think of subscriptions for using social networks? We look forward to hearing from you in the comments.
