Until now, the only way to communicate privately with a user on X (formerly Twitter) was via private messages. However, all that is about to change with the introduction of audio and video calls on the platform.

Make calls from X ☎️

One of Elon Musk’s projects with X (ex-Twitter) is to evolve the platform into a « super app, » a versatile application. The new audio and video calling functionality on the platform marks a step towards this goal.

To make a call, you’ll need to use private messaging by selecting a conversation with a user. You don’t even need a telephone number. And, don’t worry, not everyone will be able to call you unless you want them to. You’ll be able to choose who can call you and who can’t, whether it’s people already in your address book, people you follow, or verified users.

This feature is enabled by default. If you wish to disable it, you’ll need to go to your private messages and click on the gear icon to access the settings.

A feature for Premium users only ?🤑

The question arises as to whether this feature will be exclusive to Premium users. Chris Messina, the inventor of the hashtag, has discovered clues in X’s source code suggesting that this feature could be exclusively available to Premium users. Given the multitude of free messaging platforms already in existence, it remains to be seen whether charging users to access this feature will attract new Premium subscribers. Only time will tell.

The feature, which is still in its early stages, is available to some users on the iOS version of X. A more global roll-out should follow on Android and PC.

Are you an X user? What do you think of this new feature? Would you be willing to take out a subscription to be able to make calls on the platform? Tell us in the comments.
