Coursera — the open online learning platform co-founded by Stanford professors Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller — has long been a trailblazer in digital education. Now, the platform has sealed an ambitious partnership with Nigeria, with a clear mission: to reshape the country’s tech skills landscape from the ground up.

Nigeria doubles down on digital skills 🎯📡

The deal between Nigeria and Coursera goes by the name Digital Training Academy, or DTAB. It was announced publicly by Nigeria’s Minister of Education at the World Education Forum, held in the United Kingdom.

The program’s scope stretches well beyond artificial intelligence. Cybersecurity, software engineering, data science, cloud computing, and a range of other fast-growing fields are all on the curriculum. According to the official ministerial statement from Minister Alausa, learners will « also earn internationally recognized certifications valued by employers around the world. »

Where NOUN and YABATECH come in 🏛️⚙️

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) round out the initiative, adding specialized tracks aligned with the demands of today’s tech job market. To back the effort, the Nigerian government will fund 36,000 Coursera and Pluralsight licenses — unlocking access to a broad catalog of cutting-edge digital resources.

A continent hungry for tech talent 📊🚀

Across sub-Saharan Africa, an estimated 230 million jobs will be tied to the digital economy by 2030, according to the World Bank. In Nigeria alone, between 35% and 45% of workers could benefit from this technological shift before that deadline arrives. Those numbers put the stakes in sharp relief — and give this partnership a weight that goes well beyond one country’s borders.

Will these certifications truly carry weight with African employers? And could a model like this take root across the rest of the continent? Share your thoughts in the comments.
